A note from Sheryl…

For many years, I was the Program Director at NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Santa Cruz County. I found my niche when I shared my love of gardening with a group of friends I met through NAMI. I witnessed the healing power of the garden and wanted to learn how to facilitate health and wellness change in this setting.  That set me on a journey, learning how to knit together Horticultural Therapy techniques with the action and positive focused behavioral change strategies employed by Health and Wellness Coaches.

Participants of my Cultivating Wellness workshops receive a care package with horticultural influenced activities that we use in each session. Graduates of Cultivating Wellness are invited to join small groups designed to provide encouragement and motivation.

Individual clients can also incorporate garden or nature themed “homework”. Nature is a great partner in building awareness as well as providing metaphors for reflection and growth.

What is Health and Wellness Coaching?

The profession is a new one, constructed by the same elite group of universities that created the Physician Assistant vocation. Chronic illness is on the rise and most conditions can be avoided by lifestyle changes. However, this is easier said than done and most people have difficulty making those changes. Health and Wellness Coaching closes this gap. The consortium pulled from decades of behavioral change science and existing coaching best practices to create this new profession.  It is credentialed by the National Board of Health and Wellness Coaches (NBHWC)
